Choose it for the landscape

Santorini’s appeal is the relationship between its villages and the volcanic landscape beneath them. Fira and Oia make natural places to begin, but a rewarding stay need not revolve around finding a single sunset viewpoint. Allow time for quieter streets, a coastal outing and the archaeological story at Akrotiri.

The island suits couples, photographers and travelers who enjoy a deliberate pace between viewpoints. Families can enjoy it too, but the practicalities matter: steep paths, steps and exposed sunshine can be more significant than the distance between places on a map.

Getting here after the E75

There is no road connection from the mainland. Plan a ferry or flight as a separate stage, and check the actual departure port or airport rather than assuming Thessaloniki has a suitable direct service. If taking your vehicle on a ferry, reserve the correct vehicle category and check the operator’s arrival requirements.

If flying, decide where the car will stay before booking the flight. A mainland overnight buffer is a sensible option when a fixed transfer follows a long cross-border drive. A late border arrival should not force a rushed run to a departure gate.

Build a stay around a few priorities

Choose accommodation by access as well as view. Ask about luggage routes, stairs and the distance to lawful parking. Spend one part of the trip on the caldera side and another exploring the island’s different coastal scenery. Confirm archaeological opening arrangements directly before setting out.

A more comfortable visit

Wear shoes suited to stepped lanes, carry water and leave free time between activities. Busy viewpoints are easier to enjoy when you do not need to be at the next stop immediately. Weather can affect sea journeys, so keep important onward connections flexible where possible.
