A different direction from the E75
Corfu is a useful reminder that Greece is not a single onward route. From the Thessaloniki area, an overland approach to the ferry means heading west toward Igoumenitsa. This should be planned as another driving stage, followed by a sea crossing.
The Igoumenitsa–Corfu connection is operated by ferry companies, but departure times, arrival ports and vehicle arrangements must be checked for your dates. Choose the ticket around your accommodation and the driving you are prepared to do after landing.
What draws travelers here
Corfu Town brings a layered streetscape, fortifications and a distinctive architectural character. Beyond the town, the island’s green landscape and varied coastline support a different kind of day: a smaller village, a coastal walk or time near your chosen beach.
It suits travelers who like combining town life with quieter surroundings. Do not assume every coastal road is equally straightforward or every viewpoint has easy parking. Plan fewer stops and give yourself time to change direction.
Bringing a car
A car can be useful for exploring beyond the town, but check accommodation parking and ferry vehicle requirements first. The island’s winding local roads deserve patient driving after a long mainland stage. Keep the first island journey modest, particularly after an evening arrival.
A workable first visit
Give the town a dedicated visit and leave other days for the area around your base. Check the walking demands of fortifications and historic sites. If you are traveling with a stroller or limited mobility, ask specific questions about the route from parking to the accommodation.
